An assessment of the influence of CCAFS' climate data and tools on outcomes achieved 2010-2016
These four volumes comprise an evaluation report commissioned by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). The evaluation was undertaken by the independent evaluators Kornelia Rassmann and Tonya Schuetz and supported by the CCAFS internal evaluation team led by Philip Thornton and Laura Cramer. It mainly used Outcome Harvesting (OH) but also elements from Impact Pathway thinking and Contribution Analysis to describe and analyze âdevelopment outcomesâ that were directly or indirectly influenced by one of three CCAFSâ climate products â the GCM Climate Portal, MarkSimGCM, and the Climate Analogues tool.
Volume 1 is the main evaluation report.
Volume 2 presents survey results and user perspectives.
Volume 3 contains outcome stories.
Volume 4 has definitions of terms and the coding book used during the evaluation
A 'PASEO' Approach: Regionally contextualized and integrated engagement, dialoguing, knowledge sharing and communication
In research for development (R4D) and programmatic research work for development knowledge sharing and knowledge management, engagement and networking is essential for achieving behavioral change. R4D is about making sure research is contributing to positive development agendas and changes. We need to engage and communicate internally within our projects with the potential users of our results who can influence and implement change. It is important to clearly distinguishâfrom the beginningâthe difference between this âinternal communicationâ, what we will refer to as the âpaseo approachâ, and corporate communications. This document will elaborate the key characteristics/principles/good practices of what we aim for in internal project communications, the âpaseo approachâ, and what it requires in terms of processes, competencies and skills in the people who undertake it
Outcome evaluation of the Climate, Food and Farming - Global Research Alliance Development Scholarship (CLIFF-GRADS) program
This evaluation assessed the outcomes and preliminary impacts of the CLIFF-GRADS program on enhanced capacity for innovation in partner development organizations. CLIFF-GRADS awards grants to Ph.D. students who are studying low emissions development, with a focus on measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural systems. The goals of the program are to build studentsâ research skills in the field of greenhouse gas mitigation in agricultural systems, increase their capacities to understand, investigate, and implement low emissions development, and build studentsâ professional networks in the field of low emissions development. CCAFS invested USD 10,000 per student, 54 students in total over a period of eight years (2011-2018), with 48% women and 52% men participants. The evaluation found that CCAFS support through the CLIFF-GRADS program has been an important capacity development contribution to the graduate students. The CLIFF-GRADS program has had a positive catalytic effect. 31 publications were reported. 80% of respondents applied skills and knowledge from the CLIFF-GRADS program in their work. 71% could initiate new ideas and innovation at their work that made operations more effective. 60% operated new field and laboratory equipment or computer software as a result of the program. 55% built new partnerships. 31% used new or improved research methods. Students indicated that the CGIAR Centers provided strong and skilled support. Some concluding recommendations included, for example, that a clear vision of the results of the CLIFF-GRADS program can strengthen joint efforts by CCAFS and its partners. The role of change agents and champions could be made more explicit during the program
CCAFS Theory of Change facilitation guide
The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) has in total produced two facilitation guides to support the development of Impact Pathways and project Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) for result-based management. The "CCAFS Theory of Change facilitation guide" is the original, and more comprehensive guide, and was developed in June 2014. The updated version is more easy-to-use and stripped down version of the original facilitation guide, called "Revised CCAFS Theory of Change Facilitation Guide", from late 2014. The Annex belongs to the original version.

CCAFS reporting and evaluation in a results-based management framework
This document summarizes the learning from the results-based management process and makes suggestions concerning the reporting and evaluation part of the impact pathway-based project management cycle, including the evaluation process of the trial projects
CCAFS Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy
This document outlines how the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) should work on monitoring and evaluation, outlining a strategy for the work. The Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy is structured into three main sections: Goals and Objectives; Theoretical Framework and Thinking and Monitoring and Evaluation Elements
